Gabriel to Mary came,
And entered at her dwelling,
With his salutation glad,
Her maiden fears dispelling
'All hail, thou queen of maidens bright!
The Lord of earth and heaven's height,
Thy very Son
Shall soon be born
in pureness,
The Saviour of mankind.
Thou art the gate of heaven bright,
The sinners' healer kind.'
'How could I a mother be
That am to man a stranger?
How should I my strong resolve,
My solemn vows endanger?'
'Pow'r from the Holy Ghost on high
Shall bring to pass this mystery.
Then have no fear:
Be of good cheer,
Believing
That still thy chastity
In God's Almighty keeping
Shall all unsullied be.'
Then to him the maid replied,
With noble mien supernatural
'Lo! the humble handmaid I
Of God the Lord eternal
With thee, bright messenger of heav'n,
By whom this wondrous news is giv'n,
I well agree
And long to see
Fulfilled
Thy gracious prophecy.
As God my Lord doth will it,
So be it unto me!"
Hail! thou Mother of the Lord,
Who bring'st of gifts the rarest,
Peace to angels and to men
When Christ the Lord thou barest!
Do thou, we pray, entreat thy Son
For us our long'd redemption
Himself to win
And from our sin
Release us;
His succor for to give
That, when we hence are taken
We too in heav'n may live.

There was a gentle hostler
(And blessed be his name!)
He opened up the stable
The night Our Lady came.
Our Lady and Saint Joseph,
He gave them food and bed,
And Jesus Christ has given him
A glory round his head.
So let the gate swing open
However poor the yard,
Lest weary people visit you
And find their passage barred.
Unlatch the door at midnight
And let your lantern's glow
Shine out to guide the traveler's feet
To you across the snow.
There was a courteous hostler
(He is in Heaven to-night!)
He held Our Lady's bridle
And helped her to alight,
He spread clean straw before her
Whereon she might lie down,
And Jesus Christ has given him
An everlasting crown.
Unlock the door this evening
And let the gate swing wide,
Let all who ask for shelter
Come speedily inside
What if your yard be narrow?
What if your house be small?
There is a Guest is coming
Will glorify it all.
There was a joyous hostler
Who knelt on Christmas morn
Beside the radiant manger
Wherein his Lord was born.
His heart was full of laughter,
His soul was full of bliss
When Jesus, on His mother's lap,
Gave him His hand to kiss.
Unbar your heart this evening
And keep no stranger out,
Take from your soul's great portal
The barrier of doubt.
To humble folk and weary
Give hearty welcoming,
Your breast shall be to-morrow
The cradle of a King.

Gently falls the winter snow,
Earth lies silently below,
While the tender Plant appears,
Promis'd long by holy Seers.
Hail the ever blessed morn,
Hail the day that Christ was born;
Tell it thro' Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
He who built the starry skies
Low within a manger lies,
Stooping from His Throne sublime,
High above the cherubim.
Hail the ever blessed morn,
Hail the day that Christ was born;
Tell it thro' Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Say, ye wand'ring Shepherds, say
What your joyful news today;
Wherefore have ye left your sheep?
Wherefore fail your watch to keep?
Hail the ever blessed morn,
Hail the day that Christ was born;
Tell it thro' Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
"As we watched at dead of night,
Lo! we saw a wondrous sight, -
Angels singing Peace on Earth,
Telling of the Saviour's Birth."
Hail the ever blessed morn,
Hail the day that Christ was born;
Tell it thro' Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.
Haste we now to greet God's Child,
Watch His Face so meek and mild;
Learn the Love of Heaven to see
In our Lord's Humility.
Hail the ever blessed morn,
Hail the day that Christ was born;
Tell it thro' Jerusalem,
Christ is born in Bethlehem.

Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger.
There He lay, the Undefiled,
To the world a stranger.
Such a Babe in such a place,
Can He be the Savior?
Ask the saved of all the race
Who have found His favor.
Angels sang about His birth,
Wise men sought and found Him.
Heaven's star shone brightly forth
Glory all around Him.
Shepherds saw the wondrous sight,
Hear the angels singing.
All the plains were lit that night,
All the hills were ringing.
Gentle Mary laid her Child
Lowly in a manger.
He is still the Undefiled,
But no more a stranger.
Son of God of humble birth,
Beautiful the story.
Praise His name in all the earth.
Hail! The King of Glory!

Glad Christmas bells, your music tells
The sweet and pleasant story;
How came to earth, in lowly birth,
The Lord of life and glory.
No palace hall its ceiling tall
His kingly head spread over,
There only stood a stable rude
The heavenly Babe to cover.
No raiment gay, as there He lay,
Adorned the infant Stranger;
Poor, humble Child of mother mild,
She laid Him in a manger.
But from afar, a splendid star
The wise men westward turning;
The livelong night saw pure and bright,
Above His birth place burning.

O blessed town of Bethlehem,
Within thy gray green shade,
Ringed round with terraced vineyard,
And depth of olive glade.
There on thy high green pastures,
The shepherds watch their sheep,
The low large moon shines glim'ring
O'er all the upland steep.
What music of the heavens,
What magic song of bliss -
What vision of the night-tide,
What mystic light is this?
The silly sheep are blinded,
The shepherds in amaze
Stand awe-struck, all the hillside
With glory is ablaze!
The angels' joyous chorus
Rings out into the night.
O Gloria in excelsis!
Sing praises in the height.
Sing praises, men of Bethlehem,
Sing praises here below,
For Peace on earth and goodwill
He doth on your bestow.
For on this day is born there
Within your little town
A Child who Christ the Lord is
Yet wears no earthly crown:
He bringeth joy and gladness
To you and all mankind,
Yea, Peace on earth and good-will
To men of equal mind.
O blessed town of Bethlehem,
How happy is thy state!
How blest above all palaces
The stable at thy gate!
For there in manger-cradle
(Oh true the angel word!)
As King enthroned of all the worlds
Reigns Jesus Christ the Lord.

Glory to God, in the highest is ringing,
Clear from a-far it is echoing still,
Glory to God, for the Angels are singing,
Peace upon earth for the men of good will.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell
Glory to God, as the Prophets foretold it,
Over the ages the Promise was cast;
Paradise heard it, and now we behold it,
Seed of the Woman, we hail Thee at her.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell
Glory to God, for, as dews of the morning,
Songs of Thy Birthday are filling the air;
Shepherds of Bethlehem give us the warning;
Child of the Virgin, we welcome Thee there!
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell
Glory to God, let the glad exultations
Sound through the world, bring peace to the wise,
Joy for all people - Desire of the Nations ! -
Echo the tidings in songs to the skies!
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell
We, too, with Shepherds and Magi and Angel,
Prostrate before Thee our homage would bring;
Hail Thee the Saviour, the Christ, the Emmanuel,
Own Thee our Prophet, our Priest, and our King.
Nowell, Nowell, Nowell, Nowell

While shepherds kept their watching
O'er silent flocks by night,
Behold throughout the heavens
There shone a holy light
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
The shepherds feared and trembled
When lo! above the earth
Rang out the angel chorus
That hailed our Saviour's birth;
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
Down in a lowly manger
The humble Christ was born;
And God sent out salvation
That blessed Christmas morn.
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
When I was a seeker
I sought both night and day
I sought the Lord to help me
And He showed me the way.
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
He made me a watchman
Upon the city wall
And If I am a Christian
I am the least of all.
Go, tell it on the mountain
Over the hills and everywhere
Go, tell it on the mountain
That Jesus Christ is born.
